Description

“Debut!” focuses on two young soloists and a groundbreaking composer: each of them demonstrates in their own way the courage of the first time. The opening is the overture to “La clemenza di Tito” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With radiant energy and dramatic gesture, it opens the concert evening and immediately transports you into the world of opera. The famous aria “Non più andrai, farfallone amoroso” also shows Mozart's incomparable ability to make character and humor musically subversively come alive. With “O del mio dolce ardor” by Christoph Willibald Gluck, one of the most beautiful lyrical arias of the 18th century sounds. Its simple, widely stretched melody places the expression of the voice at the center. Vincenzo Bellini's “Cinta di fiori” then leads into the lush sound world of Italian bel canto, dominated by long, cantabile melodies and warm timbres. The Violin Concerto in E minor op. 64 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is one of the most popular concertos for his instrument. Right from the start, the solo violin immediately stands out – a powerful moment that combines virtuosic brilliance and lyrical expressiveness. The second symphony in A minor by Alice Mary Smith* is not only a strong piece of symphonic music but also an expression of pronounced artistic self-confidence amid rigid historical conventions: the great musical forms were then reserved exclusively for men. The English composer was the first woman in England to write a symphony. Her 1876 work impressively shows how naturally and freely she handles the large symphonic form: a powerful exclamation mark to conclude “Debut!”. * The Symphony in A minor by Alice Mary Smith is performed for the first time in Switzerland.
