With kind permission of the Murnau Foundation The head of the Haghi banking house leads a double life unnoticed. He is also the head of an international espionage center that works with theft, murder, and extortion. The head of the secret service assigns the young employee Donald Tremaine to the great unknown. Haghi, in turn, learns of this and commissions the Russian top agent Sonja to eliminate the secret agent Donald. But then Sonja and Donald fall in love… After the financial failure of METROPOLIS, Ufa was skeptical about Fritz Lang's work. However, SPIONE became a major commercial success and newcomer Gerda Maurus became famous overnight. Stylistically, Lang linked to his Dr. Mabuse films, further developed the espionage thriller genre significantly, and became a model for Alfred Hitchcock. His hero No. 326, played by Willy Fritsch, no longer even has a name but a code like 007. The film also features gadgets like a mini camera, spectacular chases, seductive agents, and an iconic villain, and was almost the mother of all spy films. Contemporary reviews: "The new Fritz Lang film by Ufa Lichtspiele [...] is brilliantly made and shows Lang's extraordinary directing skills. The plot, which has the tension of an Edgar Wallace novel, unfolds quickly and features wonderful cityscapes, train accidents, and telephone tables – a great visual report, which, although a bit too much with staged scenery, shows dazzling cuts and transitions and is cut with unmatched skill." (Siegfried Kracauer, Frankfurter Zeitung, April 11, 1928)
