Dire Straits was a band of superlatives. Instantly recognizable by Mark Knopfler's distinctive guitar playing and deep voice, they rose in just under a decade from small bar concerts to the biggest stages on the planet. As a counterpoint to the then-popular punk rock, the always strapped-for-cash ("Dire Straits") musicians only had a brief niche existence, until they developed in record time into one of the best-known and most successful bands in music history, selling over 120 million records in their career. With "Sultans of Swing," they achieved their breakthrough at the end of the 70s, putting Mark Knopfler as singer, composer, and especially guitarist in the spotlight. The group reached its zenith in the mid-80s with the song "Money For Nothing," a collaboration with fellow Geordie Sting. But success and great expectations demanded too high a price from the musicians involved. After the success of the final album "On Every Street" (38x platinum worldwide) and the eponymous world tour from 1991-1992 with a total of 229 concerts, Mark Knopfler announced in 1995 that the band would henceforth be inactive and no longer perform public concerts.
This final phase is now the focus of the tribute show "One Night of Dire Straits" 30 years later.
Guitarist and singer Alex Moll, together with his exquisitely assembled band of live and studio musicians, takes the audience on a journey full of fascinating and handcrafted music. Moll has studied Knopfler's music and guitar playing since his youth and gathers in his band only companions who have Dire Straits just as much in their blood as he does. Moll not only manages to coax the same sounds from his guitar for which Mark Knopfler became world-famous, but also to elevate the energy and joy of playing of the nine-member band to the level of the original.
