In China, this material was early elevated to an art form. Over millennia, works of extraordinary sophistication have been created, where craftsmanship and cultural significance are inseparably linked. The exhibition Red – Masterpieces of Chinese Lacquer Art at the Museum Rietberg invites you to immerse yourself in this world. It gathers outstanding objects that impress not only through their technical mastery but also through their layered symbolism. Flowers and birds stand for harmony and beauty, dragons and phoenixes for power and luck. Bats and insects also carry wishes and messages of good fortune.
