Who was Nikka von Guler? Although he is considered one of the outstanding painters of the Pahari region of North India, little is known about his life. As the son of the famous artist Nainsukh, he created princely portraits and impressive series of images on religious and literary themes in the second half of the 18th century. New research now allows us to better understand his work and trace his artistic profile as an important portraitist of his time. The exhibition Nikka – The Indian Painter features significant works from the internationally renowned Pahari collection of the Museum Rietberg, which has been built up over the past 75 years thanks to private supporters. Curated by Eberhard Fischer and created in collaboration with the GBF Foundation for Cooperative Research on South Asian Art and Artists, the exhibition makes current research findings visible and opens new perspectives on one of the great, long-overlooked masters of Indian painting.
