NEW BALKAN FOLK

Description

New Balkan Folk is a sound universe where depth and passion meet. Music between longing and outburst, carried by uneven rhythms that are allowed to stumble – and hearts set to a common pulse. Founded in 2022 by the Lucerne violinist Janina Fink, the formation unites Swiss musicians with diverse musical biographies – from folk music through classical and jazz to pop, electronic music, choir and orchestra tradition. This creates a unique, unmistakable language that defies any clear classification. Here, tradition and present rub against each other, melodies glow, fall apart and come together again in a new form. Sometimes rough and untamed, sometimes fine and permeable – always in the moment, always at risk. On stage, a space of encounter arises: between band and audience, between sound and silence. Sung fragments, instrumental virtuosity, rhythmic ecstasies and melancholic lines weave together into a shared experience that cannot be repeated. After the debut album Đelem, đelem, New Balkan Folk is currently working on its own material for the second album (2027) – with new forms between voice and instrument, between song and free sound language.
