At the other end of the world, almost 20,000 km away from us, two islands rise from the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. No one can reach here within 25 hours of flight, you can't travel further: NEUSEELAND.
Berlin photographer Roland Marske has brought back spectacular images from several trips, showing an ark of prehistoric nature like you've never seen before. It is a meeting with the elemental: deep beneath the islands, the Pacific and Australian continental plates collide and unleash mighty tectonic forces. On the North Island, they form a variety of volcanic landscapes and geothermal natural spectacles amidst impenetrable rainforests and giant ferns. On the South Island, they fold a mountain landscape comparable to the Alps, with a fjord coast that rivals Norway. Nowhere else are such diverse landscapes found so close together.
Long undiscovered and completely isolated from the rest of the world, a plant and animal world developed here that exists nowhere else on Earth. While porcelain and silk had long been produced in China, and even during the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, New Zealand was still a land of birds. Only when Gothic domes appeared in Europe was it discovered and settled by Polynesian tribes. They came across the sea in seaworthy canoes and called their new homeland "Ao-tea-roa" - the "Land of the Long White Cloud". They called themselves Maori, meaning "Original" or "Normal" in contrast to the Europeans, who arrived about 250 years after the Maori settlement and, not very flatteringly, were called Pakehas: "fat pork".
The breathtaking show staged on a large screen by Roland Marske takes viewers to a paradise-like dream destination. And wherever the author went, he only met relaxed, easy-going people who, like in old DDR propaganda films, happily laughed even at work. In their Kiwi slang, they like to call their country "Godzone", as "God's own country". And perhaps they are right ...
