Naturalist, explorer, revolutionary: the new book by bestseller author Andrea Wulf about the extraordinary life and fascinating journeys of Georg Forster
Georg Forster ventured into the most remote regions of the known world and questioned the ideas of the 18th century with his radical ideas on humanity, equality, and freedom. Andrea Wulf portrays a brilliant, fearless young man who at seventeen participated in Cook's second circumnavigation of the world - a journey between the icy Antarctica and the lush island worlds of the South Pacific. There he explored nature, people, and cultures and brought back a deep belief in the equality of people, which was far ahead of his time.
After his return celebrated in England, France, Germany, and Poland, Forster used his fame to advocate for freedom and equality and to oppose imperialism, racism, and slavery. Eventually, he was drawn into the whirlpool of the French Revolution and became a leader of the short-lived Mainz Republic.
Engagingly told and based on Forster's extensive correspondence, this book offers a view of an extraordinary, passionate life. Info about the author:
