Description

Berlin. Charlottenburg (2026) is the third and final part of the trilogy by the Russian dramaturg, director, and writer Marina Dawydowa (in exile since 2022). After the internationally acclaimed first two productions Eternal Russia (Berlin, 2017) and Museum of Uncounted Voices (Wiener Festwochen and Freiburg 2023), Dawydowa again dedicates herself to her main theme: the interweaving of history, memory, and the present. Like the two previous works, Berlin. Charlottenburg moves between theater, performance, and philosophy of history. The protagonist, an actress in exile, encounters voices and ghosts – foremost the spirit of Berlin: a city between freedom, political upheaval, and exile, then and now. The title of the event refers to Vladimir Nabokov's famous autobiographical text "Other Shores" (1951). Nabokov also appears in Davydowa's play and causes confusion. The first performance of the play is planned for the "Voices" festival in Berlin (November 2026). In Freiburg, excerpts will be presented even before the premiere. Marina Weis and Henry Meyer read, Marina Davydowa comments, and the exceptional pianist Nikolaj Medvedev accompanies the reading musically with works by Alexander Skrjabin, Sergei Prokofiev, Claude Debussy, George Gershwin, and Victor Ullmann. The event is organized in cooperation with the Tsvetaeva Center at the University of Freiburg and Henschel Verlag. Marina Davydowa, author, reader, and commentator
