Nadja Küchenmeister: The Great Wagon - 40th Freiburg Literature Talk: Reading and Conversation with Thomas Geiger

Description

Nadja Küchenmeister weaves a space under the constellation "The Great Wagon" (Schöffling & Co., 2025) that blurs Berlin, Cologne, and Lisbon as much as the past and present. Her long poem is a journey through inner and outer landscapes, told through departure, upheaval, and memory, stretching and condensing time. The Wuhletal stands for growing up in East Berlin and saying goodbye to parents. Cologne is a transitory professional place for the poet, a constant welcome and farewell. Lisbon, as if the earthquake of 1755 still echoes there today, is the setting of a love that falls apart.
Page after page, eight unrhymed triplets form expansive picture arcs. A fixed pattern full of movement, with the brightly shining constellation as a fixed point in the night sky. The poet discusses her award-winning volume (Peter-Huchel-Preis 2026) with Thomas Geiger, along with ghostly monologues in the shower, the significance of the color yellow, and the art of standing still while walking.
