After the death of her father, siblings Nicola and Philipp find an inconspicuous watercolor in the attic of their parents' house, signed "A. Hiller." Or is the first "l" perhaps actually a "t" – and the painting a genuine work of the "Führer"? As soon as this possibility arises, Philipp, Nicola, their spouses Judith and Fabian, as well as a Hitler expert and an interested buyer, get into a dispute about how to handle this knowledge: Does the painting have any financial, historical, or even artistic value just because it might be Hitler's? Can art even be separated from the artist? And would it be morally justifiable to turn the whole thing into money? How the family gets entangled in absurd discussions about guilt, atonement, anti-Semitic clichés and prejudices, as well as outrageous inheritance disputes, how family histories are forged, lucrative provenance claims are made, and immoral offers are exchanged, is a class of its own! Marius von Mayenburg, dramaturg, director, and author of numerous award-winning and internationally performed plays, succeeds with "Nachtland" – a commissioned work for the London Royal Court Theatre, premiered in 2022 at the Berlin Schaubühne – in creating a mischievous-bad linguistic comedy about our problematic coming to terms with the past, which goes exactly as far as where profit begins.
