Program: Featuring music by W. A. Mozart, R. Schumann, and M. Wettstein Concert details: Created in different eras with various personal backgrounds, the two piano quartets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Robert Schumann are addressed to an imaginary duet. Mozart, with this composition, inadvertently invents the piano quartet. It begins with a call into the unknown, sounding even more dramatic in G minor. The piano and the strings engage in a dialogue, with all four voices being equal. The music is full of tension and questions, and initially, there is no clear melody that could provide an answer. Schumann composed his piano quartet in E-flat major "with Clara in the heart." Especially in the third movement, the cello theme with expressive sustained notes and song-like melodic turns plays a significant role: an intimate, inner monologue, as if Schumann is addressing Clara. The structure is dialogic: the cello introduces the melody, the piano responds, overlays, and surrounds – a quiet dialogue between two voices sitting opposite each other spatially. Both works understand the piano quartet as a genuine conversation among four voices, not as piano music with string accompaniment. Mozart opens with a call outward – Schumann responds with an inward conversation.
