Concert details: Nachtklang at the Jewish Museum Switzerland presents texts by Jewish authors of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Gideon Klein. The Czech-Jewish composer Gideon Klein wrote his string trio as a young man in his twenties in Theresienstadt concentration camp and completed it on October 7, 1944, nine days before his transport to Auschwitz. The score, entrusted to a friend, came into the hands of his family after the war and was finally published in 1993. The string trio echoes the existential struggle in the camp, but also the power of music. Far from any sentimentality, powerful and self-confident, it draws on Moravian folk songs, which it processes in a simple and straightforward manner. Many musicians were among the inmates, and despite the circumstances, much music was played, and the classical repertoire of chamber music was maintained – it is quite possible that Beethoven's string trios were performed there.
