Description

Based on the novel by Irmgard Keun
Stage adaptation by Gottfried Greiffenhagen Directed by Irene Christ with Johanna Marie Bourgeois 48 hours in the year 1936. The 19-year-old Susanna describes - initially with exuberant zest for life and satirical humor - the events around her: her passionate love for Franz, with whom she has future plans; the changed behavior of the people close to her; life with the 'racial laws'; overall the new normality: everyday life during Nazi rule. Hitler's appearance before an enthusiastic crowd at the Frankfurt Opera Square becomes the starting point of significant events. The noose tightens. Denunciations are commonplace. "Mothers report their daughters-in-law, daughters their fathers-in-law, brothers their sisters, sisters their brothers... neighbors their neighbors." In a very short time, Susanna is no longer just a humorous observer but is in the thick of it and forced to grow up. During an out-of-control festival, shortly before midnight, a major life decision must be made. Decisions are made after midnight. Irmgard Keun, a star of the literary scene in the 1930s and later rediscovered, wrote the novel "After Midnight" during her exile. It was published in the Netherlands in 1937. With her earlier novels "Gilgi, eine von uns" and "Das kunstseidene Mädchen," she achieved sensational success. Gottfried Greiffenhagen condenses Keun's great novel into a desperately cheerful and mercilessly sharp theatrical piece in his monologue adaptation.
