Description

The Hans Erni Museum, in collaboration with the SGBK (Swiss Society of Visual Artists) Bern/Romandie Section, presents an exhibition exclusively for female artists on the theme of Myth. Artistic positions from the SGBK and guests from the Lucerne art scene are shown, dealing with the theme "Myth – old stories, new forms." Known are the ancient gods and hero legends, for example by Homer or Ovid. They are attempts by early cultural stages to depict questions about the origin and end of the world, the creation of gods and humans, and certain natural phenomena through images and personification. Myth can also be explained as an attempt to portray moral, existential, and fundamental aspects of humans in relation to their worldview. But in its second meaning, myth also refers to a worldview that is fundamentally opposed to scientific logic. This exhibition explores these diverse interpretations and representations of myth in contemporary art and thus encourages discussion. The group exhibition opens a tension field between tradition and present, narration and deconstruction, symbolic power and individual interpretation through historical and modern myth images. The exhibition is based on the work of the house artist: Hans Erni (1909–2015), who was not only an outstanding Swiss artist but also a powerful storyteller. His works are deeply imbued with mythological figures, ancient themes, and humanistic ideals—often in connection with technology, science, and the human image of the 20th century. Works by Beatrice Bader, Ruth Baettig, Claudia Bucher, Krystyna Diethelm, Cornelia Egli, Monika Feucht, Barbara Freiburghaus, Elisabeth Fux, Selina Gaillard, Barbara Gut, Brigitte Haas, Alexandra Haeberli, Barbara Hennig Marques, Karin Hofer, Patricia Jacomella Bonola, Christine Jenzer-Montet, Anne-Christine Kalbermatten, Monika Loeffel, Marina Ortelli, Maria Petrushina, Ruth Righetti, Verena Romanens, Sabina Schwaar, and Cécile Stadelmann-Hochreuthener are also featured.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication and a diverse program of events.
