Glamours, the debut album of the four-member Brooklyn trio My Son The Doctor, walks a fine line between the slacker rock of the 90s and the infectious pop-punk of the 2000s, embodying the often carefree, sometimes irreverent, and consistently catchy sound of a band at the forefront of the indie rock scene in the Five Boroughs. As a result of nearly a decade of musical collaboration, the songs on 'Glamours' reflect the brisk – and at times feverish – approach of Brian Hemmert (vocals), Joel Kalow (guitar), Matt Nitzberg (bass), and John Mason (drums) to songwriting and live performance. Forged in the melting pot of the New York DIY scene (where they frequently shared the stage with other New York bands like Bodega, Gustaf, and Teenage Halloween), the ten tracks of the album crystallize the band's stunning energy as well as their nimble, responsive approach to songwriting, employing both anthemic and rough qualities – dissonant, occasionally jagged riffs intertwine with catchy, quirky, free-associative wordplay and tightly wound percussion, creating a space that is transgressive, spirited, and delightfully offbeat throughout the 30 minutes of the album. Born in an improvised environment and written on a knife's edge, 'Glamours' embodies the project's laid-back philosophy, resting on a foundation of tension and determination; tender self-observation gives way in 'Drunk Kids' to memorable, poignant hooks, meandering subway impressions transition into exuberant call-and-response in 'Laurence Bigando', and breakneck restlessness transforms into dissonant relief in 'Pink Banana'. While the album is heavily inspired by alternative giants like Sonic Youth, Hop Along, Jeff Rosenstock, and Weezer, it embodies that raw energy that makes My Son The Doctor so unique – an echo of sweaty, sold-out concerts and that atmosphere that can only be experienced live. Recorded at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium in North Carolina, mixed by Jeremy Snyder (IDLES, Pure Adult, Gilla Band), and featuring a cover by Lydia Gammill of Gustaf, 'Glamours' offers an unfiltered interpretation of the New York-born indie rock of the 2020s – one that is never contrived, not algorithmic, and constantly evolving.
