Description

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the International Day of Older Persons, medical anthropologist Dr. Piet van Eeuwijk and collection curator Dr. Petra Hornung will jointly lead the special exhibition "Life & Let Live. Traces of Humanity" at the Thurgau Historical Museum. The museum talk at the Old Armory in Frauenfeld connects selected exhibits with aging across different times and regions of the world. Thanks to medical advances, the global population is getting older. While working into old age remains a bitter necessity in many places, the majority of older people in Switzerland are secured, self-determined, and mobile through the pension system. However, studies show that loneliness and social isolation increase with age. On the International Day of Older Persons, the contributions of older individuals are recognized, and the opportunities and challenges of aging populations in the 21st century are highlighted. Aging here and elsewhere The museum talk explores the treatment of older people in history and today, drawing comparisons between the cultures of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Dr. Piet van Eeuwijk's areas of expertise include aging, health, and care in various regions of the world, especially Indonesia and Tanzania, where he initiated research projects on the realities of life for older men and women. Participatory Exhibition The event is part of the program of the special exhibition "Life & Let Live. Traces of Humanity" at the Thurgau Historical Museum, which is open until November 29, 2026. The talk exemplifies the participatory approach of the exhibition, actively involving visitors in the tour. The museum talk will take place on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Old Armory in Frauenfeld. Seating is available to follow the discussion. Afterwards, coffee and cake will be offered. Admission is free, registration is required at: historisches-museum.tg.ch/events. Caption:
