Walter Sonderegger Sr. is 90 years old, his son Walter Jr. is 65, and both are still working at the embroidery machine. But Junior has made his decision: After four generations, the family business is closing. The Appenzell region is losing its last embroiderers. The documentary follows father and son during the final months before the end of the embroidery business. Amid machines, punch cards, and rolls of fabric, memories unfold of an industry that once made Eastern Switzerland world-famous. While Walter Senior finds it hard to let go, his son tries to draw a conscious line under the past. In doing so, the film tells not only of the end of a business, but also of the disappearance of an entire working world and of the question of what remains when a life’s work comes to an end. Special screening in the presence of the filmmaker and other guests, including a panel discussion and reception afterward.
