Gioachino Rossini turned to monumental historical themes in the later part of his operatic work. Moses and Pharaoh represents a significant milestone of his French period. This grand opera is a revised version of the composer's earlier Italian opera Moses in Egypt, which he expanded and adapted to the demands of French musical theater. It was first performed on March 26, 1827, at the Royal Academy of Music in the Salle Le Peletier in Paris.
