by Josef von Sternberg (US) Amy Jolly (Marlène Dietrich) is a singer in a cabaret in Morocco, then militarily occupied by France. During a performance in a tuxedo and top hat, she is seduced by a legionnaire (Gary Cooper) while the notable Monsieur La Bessière has asked her to marry him. A love triangle with multiple twists: “a tumultuous, fierce, and consuming love story.” Exaggerated eroticism and splendid unreal settings, the film delivers a biting and cynical reflection on sentimental illusion, obsessive love, and loss of self.
After The Blue Angel, Marlène Dietrich once again dons the costume of a cabaret singer, proudly displaying an ambivalent gender expression. The film is a commercial and critical success. It marks the emergence of both the femme fatale myth and a Hollywood star, who became a queer icon.
