Description

Concise in size, outstanding in quality: The collection at the Kunst Museum Winterthur is considered one of the most beautiful of classical modernism – in Switzerland and beyond. On January 2, 1916, the museum "der Kunst und Wissenschaften," as the inscription above the entrance reads, opened its doors. It was an expression of the bourgeois communal spirit of the prominent Winterthur collectors and patrons. In its inaugural year, French modernism made its first major appearance in Switzerland. Since then, art has evolved radically, and the exhibition spaces continued to offer an ideal setting – also for contemporary art, which from 1994 received its own space in the extension designed by architects Gigon/Guyer. The infrastructure, especially wall coverings and lighting systems, has become outdated; their urgent renewal will lead to a six-month closure. This allows for a rethinking of the collection and a focused rehang. The giants of modernism are still represented with masterpieces: Claude Monet's Water Lilies, Vincent van Gogh's "Postman," Piet Mondrian's grid compositions, and Paul Klee's subtle resolution of constructivist rigor in his mysterious painting Blooming. In Winterthur, key works by Alice Bailly, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Meret Oppenheim, Verena Loewensberg, Maria Lassnig, among others, are also included. The exhibition continues with Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which led to the classical modernism from Cubism to Surrealism and Constructive art. Post-war modernism begins with the series of works by Alberto Giacometti and Giorgio Morandi, complemented by selected positions of American post-war art. The Winterthur collection is not only a reflection of the developments in art but also a homage to the collectors: Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser, Richard Bühler, Heinrich Wolfer, and Clara and Emil Friedrich-Jezler, who engaged with the art of their respective eras.
