Strau$$ – A Dance Between the Chairs A project commissioned by Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna It has long been clear to the masters of Mnozil Brass that the waltz-drunk "Duidu, Duidu" and its relaxed counterpart "Dudidubidu" are actually just a stone's throw away from each other, not much more than "a warm embracing dance away." For more than thirty years, the seven virtuosos have effortlessly navigated between Johann Strauss and Frank Sinatra, between Shostakovich and Prince, or passionately from Schubert to their kindred spirits in Queen. They are equally unconcerned with the solemn grandeur of one side as they are with the supposed banality of the other. But Strauss – who was fervently revered by Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, as well as the craftsmen and the girls from the suburbs (and even a Gershwin) – was the original father of nonchalantly dancing between the chairs. Strauss was the first to produce hits by the dozen, he hired an arranger to work faster, and he understood that he could reproduce his sound worldwide with his brothers. He was the first to blur the lines between high and low culture and became a mass phenomenon as the waltz king – the cash registers never rang sweeter.
