Miss Carbón is based on the true story of Carla “Carlita” Rodríguez, (played by Lux Pascal) the first female coal miner in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz. An old superstition held that women posed a risk of cave-ins in the mine, which is why mining work was reserved for men. Carlita, however, manages to prove herself in the misogynistic working environment of the mine. At the same time, she embarks on her personal journey of gender transition, during which she finds new friends and a chosen family. The film showcases Carlita’s resilience, her passion for mining and how she manages to break down the system from within.
