The singers Stella Tsianios and Stella Morgenstern dedicate themselves to the female voices in Rembetiko, which once made this special music of Greece popular with their singing. Rembetiko, an urban subculture from the harbor pubs of Athens, Thessaloniki, and Piraeus, was created by people who were robbed of their homeland and had to experience the trauma of migration. Even in the most difficult circumstances, they tried to preserve their dignity. The rebellious rhythms of Rembetiko are an expression of their protest. "The Blues of the Greeks," as Rembetiko is also called, is closely linked to the history of the Greek diaspora, was once banned, and is now part of UNESCO World Heritage. Together with Lefteris Gioro and Kostas Smyrnios from the legendary Athenians, Stella&Stella have put together an extraordinary repertoire. In the best Cafe'-Aman tradition, they sing old Greek love songs as well as songs about the worries and needs of ordinary people. The focus of this evening is on the female singers of Rembetiko, who have courageously raised their voices and significantly shaped this emotional, expressive music.
