Battle rap regularly fills venues across Germany, is increasingly present online, and mobilizes a steadily growing fan base. Rafael Schmauch – pioneer of the scene and long-time protagonist – opens a window behind the scenes of this special linguistic art in his book "Battle Rap: The Art of Insulting." He traces the development of an art form that has thrived for two decades on linguistic sharpness, performative intelligence, and ritualized competition. At the same time, he reveals exactly how battle rap works and discusses sharp angles, crashing punchlines, and convincing performances.
