Description
Michelle David grew up in a New York City church community, started singing at the age of four, and joined her first group, The Mission of Love, at five. Before making a name for herself in Europe, she toured worldwide with Broadway productions like "Mama," performed in major theater productions such as "The Sound of Motown," "Glory of Gospel," and "Mahalia," and recorded for stars like Diana Ross and Michael Bolton. These early experiences laid the foundation for a career characterized by authenticity, versatility, and a distinctive voice that bridges genres and generations. Michelle David & The True Tones emerged from the celebrated project "The Gospel Sessions," initiated by musicians Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit. What started as raw, pure reinterpretations of gospel quickly developed into a full-fledged band with a unique identity. With drummer Bas Bouma, who completed the core quartet, the group crafted its own characteristic sound: gospel as the root, confidently branching into soul, funk, afrobeat, and rhythm & blues. With seven studio albums ("The Gospel Sessions Vol. 1–4," "Truth & Soul," and "Brothers & Sisters"), the band has created an impressive body of work recognized internationally. Highlights include the award of "Truth & Soul" as "Album of the Year" by BBC Radio 6 Music, the selection as "Album of the Month" by the French radio station FIP, and an Edison nomination (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammys). Their music has been praised in leading media such as De Volkskrant, Kulturnews, and Jazzthing, solidifying their reputation as one of Europe's most captivating soul and gospel ensembles. On stage, Michelle David & The True Tones develop an undeniable, powerful presence. Whether as a tight, energetic quartet or complemented by a full brass section, their shows radiate joy, musicality, and groove. They have thrilled audiences at major festivals like Pinkpop, North Sea Jazz, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, and the London Jazz Festival. TV appearances, sold-out club tours across Europe, and broad playlist support have further expanded their reach, making them comfortable on international stages and streaming platforms alike. On February 27, 2026, Michelle David & The True Tones will release their most personal album yet: "Soul Woman." Focusing on themes like identity, healing, and growth, the album reflects David's own journey of self-discovery. "How can I ask others to take time to reflect on their lives without doing the same myself?" she asks. Musically, the album bridges timeless soul with contemporary grooves, inspired by legends like Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Four Seasons, and D’Angelo. The result is a collection of songs that are both intimate and universal, translating personal truths into messages of empowerment and connection. With "Soul Woman," Michelle David & The True Tones reaffirm their place as one of the most important voices in modern soul and gospel. Whether in the studio or on stage, as a quartet or full ensemble, their music elevates, empowers, and unites, carrying forward a legacy of love, resilience, and groove that continues to inspire audiences worldwide. www.michelledavidandthetruetones.com www.dynamitekonzerte.com Photo: Michel Bosch
