Messy Decisions. (In)Voluntary Sterilisation in Contexts of Precarity

Reproductive decisions between free will and coercion. This event is part of the accompanying program for the exhibition "Atlas of Reproduction – Babies, Borders, Geopolitics" When is a decision about sterilization influenced by coercion? When does it occur as a personal decision? And can these be clearly distinguished, especially for people living under precarious conditions? Using the example of Mexican sterilization campaigns from 1960 to today and proletarian sterilization policies at the beginning of the 20th century in Germany, we discuss reproductive decisions between free will and coercion.
