In July 2023, Sebastian Studnitzky traveled to Odesa* (Ukraine) to record 3 music pieces with the local orchestra at the Odesa Philharmonic. The goal of the recording was to raise awareness and donations for the situation in Ukraine through the release of the songs and a music video (which shows a documentation of the trip, the recording, and the situation in Odesa). Just a few days after the recording session, the Orthodox cathedral in Odesa was heavily damaged during a Russian missile attack. The cathedral is only a few blocks away from the Philharmonic where the recording took place. Since then, there have been almost daily missile and drone attacks on Odesa. This drama led to a development of the original idea: instead of just raising awareness with the release of the recording and the video, efforts were made to bring parts of the orchestra to Germany for several concerts. In March 2024, the 22-member chamber orchestra of the Odesa Philharmonic was able to go on a tour to Germany. The tour started with a concert in the sold-out Philharmonic in Odesa, at a time when Russian drone attacks on Odesa almost every night caused fear, destruction, and suffering. The subsequent tour in Germany culminated in a concert at the fully sold-out Gedächtniskirche in Berlin. This concert was recorded and will be released as an audio recording alongside the tour. The Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Studnitzky works across genres. Besides various jazz projects, he plays electronic club music and so-called crossover between jazz, electro, and classical music. He is probably the only musician in this country who has been awarded both the ECHO JAZZ and the OPUS Klassik, and that on two different instruments (trumpet & piano). He is also the founder and musical director of the Berlin XJAZZ! Festival, taught as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden (formerly also as a professor at the music colleges in Berlin & Zurich), and is the artistic director of “BlackForestJazz - the jazz festival in the North Black Forest”. *Ukrainian spelling with only one “s” is used here.
