Description

An original anti-war drama by Karel Čapek set in an unnamed country. Many references – the name of the mother Dolores or the theme of civil war – evoke the Spanish reality of 1936–1939, when the country was torn apart by a fratricidal conflict. We live in a democracy where everyone has the right to their opinion... But an opinion should not be a lie and hatred should not be a program. Trivialized expressions of intolerance, extremism, and selfishness divide society and deepen the trenches that can become real ditches. The world is certainly not black and white. Alongside dark currents, there are also examples of decency, selflessness, and solidarity. Still, we ask how far indifference and resignation can lead. Without seeking literal parallels and historical comparisons, even today many mothers lose their sons. The play is constructed as a fatalistic drama. We have therefore tried to lighten its weight at times with the presence of playful and ironic spirits – beings that observe human efforts with detachment and perspective. How it all resonates, you will ultimately judge, dear audience.
