Since 2018, the Maulbronner Chamber Choir, under the direction of Benjamin Hartmann, has performed all of Felix Mendelssohn's choral-symphonic sacred works, accompanied by the Hannover Court Chapel, featuring changing internationally renowned soloists and always historically informed. This year, with the oratorio Paulus, the seven-part Mendelssohn cycle from Maulbronn reaches its conclusion and climax. Mendelssohn was still under the impression of his groundbreaking revival of Bach's Matthäuspassion in 1829 for a long time. However, this decisive spark had to smolder within him for a few more years before he set out in 1832 to create an oratorio of similar scope. The references to the great model are evident in the chorales and complex fugues, yet Mendelssohn also shapes the composition in the spirit of his time through his targeted use of instrumentation. Today, Paulus is considered a bridge work between Baroque tradition and Romantic renewal. Theologically, the oratorio remains relevant to this day. The proverbial transformation of the Christian persecutor Saul into Apostle Paul becomes a gripping psychological portrait, while the conversion scene forms the central highlight of the work.
