Gigerhannes tells the multifaceted, historically inspired story of Johann Majoleth (1774–1856). He was a Yenish musician from Untervaz. Also a besom binder and storyteller, and an ancestor of the historian Marco Majoleth. The narration combines transmitted facts with vividly embellished stories and portrays a man who, with little possessions but much wit and warmth, brightened his world. And whose melodies still resonate today. In the first decades of the 19th century, he traveled through the land with his wife Mariann as a traveling musician and storyteller. With violin, hammered dulcimer, and lively imagination, they brought sound and light to times that were often hard and dismissive – yet they always found open doors. The book is one of the first published by the new Zentralplatz Verlag of Urs Bernet. The afterword was written by Willi Wottreng, who became famous among other things for his obituaries, which are colorful life descriptions. He is also the managing director of the Radgenossenschaft der Landstrasse, the organization of Swiss Yenish and Sinti founded in 1975. Marco Majoleth grew up in the Freiamt in Aargau, but the stories of his great-grandfather from Untervaz and visits to the grandparents in Davos have connected him to Graubünden since childhood. In his grandfather's small, smoky living room on the ground floor of the parental house, he first heard of Gigerhannes. After an apprenticeship in commerce, he completed his Matura and studied history and German literature in Bern.
