«Make Things Happen» An astonishingly optimistic title for a rather melancholically tuned album. But this is perhaps due to the fundamental ambivalence of melancholy: facing the future with your back turned, still keeping everything left behind in view. Or it is this rather Scandinavian sound aesthetic that characterizes the new album of Swiss saxophonist and woodwind generalist Marcel Lüscher. The muscle play, the displayed virtuosity is foreign to Lüscher. It is about shaping the sound and the creative search for the supporting melody. That virtuosity also plays a role here is Lüscher's tone – whether on the saxophone or clarinet or bass clarinet – audible with every note. The gentle exhalation of the past, the energetically open screaming and snarling towards the new. A design with depth and immediacy. In the quartet, this concept is perfectly staffed: Lüscher's brother Thomas tends to impressionistic soundscapes in collaboration with drummer Kaspar Rast, who landed from the Nik Bärtsch orbit, while Björn Meyer sometimes perceives his six-string electric bass as a lowered guitar, but from the depth of the space can also push forward powerfully – also powerfully funky. Flowers tilt their heads, a summer ends somewhere, the following spring is canceled, and the tulips pay with black withering for too much sunlight. Sitting in the middle are old friends (a wonderful Simon and Garfunkel cover) like book spines side by side on a park bench. With «UNIT live!» Moods and the renowned Swiss jazz label UNIT Records pool their forces and create a joint format. At regular intervals, we bring current productions from the UNIT cosmos to the Moods stage and show the diversity of Unit Jazz.
