Description

Helga is a young dramaturg at one of Switzerland's most renowned theaters. When she receives the assignment to support a Spanish theater collective in researching a new production about conspiracy theories, she doesn't realize how much this work will shake her own worldview. Together with Klaus, an experienced stage technician of the house, she embarks on a journey through the dazzling world of myths, claims, and rumors – until Helga encounters a question that won't let her go. MAGIC KINGDOM is a clever, humorous exploration of the fascination and the dangerous allure of conspiracy narratives. What initially seems absurd and far-fetched turns out to be a mirror of our present: because we live in a world where we spend more time exposing fake news than informing ourselves thoroughly – and where even established truths are increasingly questioned. Ignorance, mistrust, and conspiracy thinking are normalized in a creepy and insidious way. Why do people believe in things that are not true? Are we still capable of distinguishing truth from lies? And if not, who protects us from it? The two directors and playwrights Adrián Perea and Álvaro Nogales pose these questions with ease, wit, and a disturbing proximity to reality in MAGIC KINGDOM. With playful yet precise text work and in clear, humorous directing language, the Spanish theater collective Mudanzas López reflects on itself and our world.
