Description
A small town in Switzerland. A household with a woman and her son. There is no man, there are men. And there is always a lack of money, especially of tenderness. With "Königin der Nacht" (Rowohlt, 2026), Lukas Bärfuss continues his essay "Vaters Kiste" and turns to his mother. As a woman without education and prospects, but with an insatiable desire for freedom, her only weapon is the powerlessness: the evil mouth. And the son? He must practice early in art to survive this mother.
"What then follows in just 120 pages is actually 'A Short Book About My Mother', and yet much more: a complete social analysis based on her individual case. But one that meets the highest literary standards," writes Andreas Platthaus (FAZ), who will converse with the Büchner Prize winner.
