Description
Time is often thought of as a river – from the past, present, and future. In the languages of the Yolŋu, the indigenous people of Arnhem Land in northern Australia, there is a fourth tense: a form of time in which the three temporal levels do not follow each other but intertwine. A time that does not pass but exists – fundamentally contradicting Western notions of beginning, middle, and end. Liza Lim makes this fourth tense the compositional idea of an extraordinary project: three ensembles from Freiburg come together – the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and Ensemble Recherche – each embodying a layer of time: symphonic present, baroque past, contemporary future. Their interplay creates a non-linear time belonging to dreams, poetry, and music. It conceals another attitude towards the tipping points of our season: Western conceptions of time know the "point of no return." The Yolŋu concept, however, never allows the past to fully fade – it remains effective, present. This softness of time is not naivety but a different form of resilience: the idea that healing and change remain within time. A hope born from learning with indigenous knowledge. In response to this monumental project, the Philharmonic Orchestra performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 "Titan" – a work that can be clearly understood as a turning point in music history. With this concert, Chief Conductor André de Ridder bids farewell to Freiburg. As an indefatigable enthusiast of contemporary music and close friend of Ensemble Recherche, we thank him sincerely – and know that we will meet him often on his new paths.
