Delve into a fascinating chapter of Valais history through the lens of literary creation and contemporary scientific research. In 1466, Valais experienced one of Europe’s first major witch hunts. This event invites you to explore this turbulent period through the combined perspectives of an author and two scientists. Our guests: Philippe Favre, author of *1466, le temps des sorcières* (1466: The Age of Witches), will share his writing process and how he brought this historical period to life through his narrative. The author is known for his rigorous approach to history. He draws on in-depth research while using fiction to fill gaps in the historical record and make history accessible to the general public. His works are rooted in the history of Valais and Switzerland, exploring little-known periods or significant events from the region’s past. Chantal Ammann-Doubliez, who holds a master’s degree in classical literature and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Paris-Sorbonne, is a graduate of the École nationale des Chartres and worked as an archivist for the Sion Cathedral Chapter. One of her publications focuses on witch trials in Valais during the 15th century, particularly in the Conches Valley. As a specialist in witch trials in Valais, she will share her expertise on archival sources and the documentary evidence surrounding these trials in our canton. Moderator: Martine Ostorero, an associate professor of medieval history at the University of Lausanne, specializes in witch trials in French-speaking Switzerland. She will place the Valais case within the broader context of French-speaking Switzerland and the Alps, shedding light on the social and cultural dimensions of these accusations.
