Sunday, 08.11.2026, 4:00 PM Duration: In line with our annual motto "The Power of Women," our series on Berlin Personalities highlights a nearly forgotten woman whose achievements in 19th-century Berlin seem almost miraculous: the writer, women's rights activist, and social activist Lina Morgenstern. Against all socio-political resistance, the Jewish woman born in Breslau, Prussia, founded her first charity at 18, wrote several bestsellers, launched the first newspaper by women for women, and organized Germany's first International Women's Congress with attendees from around the world. She became famous not least for the Berlin People's Kitchens, which she initiated and which earned her the nickname "Soup Lina." The award-winning author and filmmaker Gerhard J. Rekel, who has worked for Terra X, Arte, and ARD, traces the exciting life of Lina Morgenstern based on new archival findings and two years of research — played by Alina Gause, who is also responsible for the compositions in the play. Alongside her are Carl Martin Spengler and Dennis Weissert, known from our house production "Georg Kreisler: Adam Schaf hat Angst." The two portray Lina Morgenstern's companions and opponents, who demanded all her courage and ingenuity to shape social and political life.
