Description

Georg W. Pabst was one of the great directors of the German silent film era, "The Joyless Street" (1925) is considered one of his masterpieces. After Hitler's rise to power, Pabst emigrated to the USA but could not succeed in Hollywood. So he returned with his family to his sick mother in Austria, thus placing himself in the hands of National Socialism. Goebbels gave him a clear offer: "Consider what I can offer you. For example, concentration camps. But what I can also offer you is: everything you want. Any budget, any actor, any film you want to make." Pabst wanted to make films and started a second career in Nazi Germany. But where are the limits? Is there a way back after the Mephistophelian pact? How does the triad between guilt, conscience, and repression work, and how do you deal with it when the political situation keeps worsening until it is too late?
