“Why do you drive a nail through two hands that do not seek each other?” Two royal children, Prince Leonce from the kingdom of Popo and Princess Lena of Pipi, flee from an arranged marriage because they want to escape boredom and determine their own lives. And they end up – by chance or fate – in each other's arms. Can they ever escape the societal roles assigned to them? In Georg Büchner's seemingly romantic comedy "Leonce and Lena," world-weariness meets wit, fairy tales meet melancholy, and poetry meets pop (o). Behind the mask of comedy, the failed and disillusioned revolutionary Büchner sketches a society without progress, perspective, or utopia, where, out of boredom, grains of sand are counted or stones are spat upon, while the rulers forget their political duties and subjects. Even a memory button in a pocket watch does nothing! In the end, Leonce promises: "We will smash all clocks, ban all calendars, and only count hours and moons according to the flower clock, only according to bloom and fruit."
