How we sometimes fail, doubt, stumble; what binds and shapes us. What it means to be an unintentional mother or not a mother, to lose a child or not to be able to let go. "Mothers [...] nest in our minds and hearts," writes Lena Gorelik, "they whisper to us, scold, comfort, and do so even after they have passed away, even when we hardly knew them. We take our steps on what we have become thanks to or despite our mothers." Lena Gorelik, born in 1981 in St. Petersburg, moved to Germany with her Jewish family in 1992. She became known for novels – e.g., "Wer wir sind" (2021) – that address topics such as migration, identity, family, memory, and belonging. She is active in debates about culture, democracy, and migration and has received multiple awards, including the Heinrich Mann Prize for Essay Writing in 2024. As part of the Jewish Culture Days, in cooperation with the Jewish Religious Community Heidelberg.
