Johann Peter Hebel's Calendar Stories – read today Johann Peter Hebel (1760–1826) made literary history with his calendar texts. The philosopher Ernst Bloch simply called his "Unexpected Reunion" "the most beautiful story in the world." Hebel's 200th anniversary of death is an occasion to revisit the work of the theologian and calendar maker: What makes his stories so unique? What discoveries can be made in his lesser-known texts? And where might his moral stories remain unfamiliar to us? The event invites you to explore these questions through two new publications. The volume "Curiosities" offers a double selection from Hebel's calendar texts: on the one hand, his legendary "Treasure Chest of the Rhenish House Friend" (1811), on the other hand, a collection of lesser-known stories from later years. The second volume gathers "Hebel Effects," namely 30 reactions from contemporary writers to the author's texts. As varied as these literary responses are: they all provide insight into the character and relevance of the "House Friend" Hebel's stories.
