A virus transforms humans into animals, and at the center is the pubescent Émile. A fantastic coming-of-age story, X-MEN arthouse style, featuring a beautiful father-son relationship and Adèle Exarchopoulos in a strong supporting role. The mother of sixteen-year-old Émile (Paul Kircher) is an early victim of a still mysterious disease that turns people into animals. However, when an accident occurs during a group transfer to a newly built special facility, the animal beings flee into the surrounding wilderness. Together with his father François (Romain Duris), Émile desperately searches for his mother. But in the village, hostility against the mutants rises, and the two, despite the active support of an understanding policewoman (Adèle Exarchopoulos), are forced to navigate through more than just the thicket of the forest. LE RÈGNE ANIMAL is one of the great French sci-fi films of recent years. The stunning masks stand out, bringing the zoomorphic afflicted to life in impressively realistic close-ups. Through them, the film ventures with philosophical sensitivity into questions of the human/animal dichotomy. Yet, despite its fantastic world, a premise of global scale, and escalating social unrest, the film remains beautifully intimate. Central are the pubescent Émile and his ambivalent relationship with his father. While François clings to the past, his son is consumed by fears of social and physical changes.
