In Italian with German surtitles. Count Almaviva's household is in disarray: instead of caring for his wife Rosina, he tries to seduce her chambermaid Susanna before her wedding. Therefore, their marriage with his servant Figaro is repeatedly postponed for the most hypocritical reasons. But Susanna is smarter than the Count suspects and outsmarts not only him but also Figaro, her future husband. In the meantime, the Count's page, Cherubino, stirs up all kinds of additional erotic confusion. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro," premiered in Vienna in 1786, is now regarded as the epitome of opera buffa. The libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte is based on Beaumarchais' play "La folle journée ou Le Mariage de Figaro" (1778), which was initially banned in France due to its depiction of the aristocracy outwitted by their servants. Mozart's setting stands out for its psychological depth, dramaturgical structure, and compositional finesse. Figaro, the clever servant, receives lively, rhythmically striking arias like "Se vuol ballare, signor Contino," while the Countess is characterized by lyrical, melancholic melodies. The Count, a representative of the ancien régime, often appears pompous musically but also internally torn in his arias. The opera employs a complex ensemble technique—especially in the famous finale of the second act, which intertwines multiple levels of action. The abolition of class boundaries through musical equality of the characters was revolutionary in 1786.
