Since New York pianist Lawrence Fields released his debut album *To The Surface* in 2024 – which was awarded four stars by *DownBeat* and named one of the best albums of the year – his career as a bandleader has taken off rapidly. He is now embarking on his fifth European tour with his spectacular Supersonic Trio, starting for the first time in London.
Lawrence Fields is not only an extraordinary pianist and master of various keyboard instruments – he has consistently ranked at the top in magazine polls for years – but his ability to combine memorable melodies with refined harmonies has already earned him a unique place among the many talented instrumentalists in today's jazz scene.
His debut album with the Supersonic Trio – a formation he has perfected over the years through regular live performances in New York City with high-caliber musicians – features sessions with friends from Butcher Brown, bassist Andrew Randazzo, and his favorite drummer Corey Fonville; special guest and Grammy winner Nate Smith; as well as his tour bandmates Kyle Miles and Elé Howell. Miles has developed an electric bass style that avoids common clichés; oscillating between a solid bass foundation and expansive, atmospheric soundscapes – and capable of enriching the timbres of both a grand piano and a Fender Rhodes – he significantly contributes to the band's harmonic sound. Elé Howell is among the most skilled young drummers in the scene and is a standout talent appreciated by greats like Ravi Coltrane and Gary Bartz for their bands.
With the Supersonic Trio, Fields expands his profile as a musician rooted in the jazz piano tradition to include the sounds of his youth: soul jazz, funk, and hip-hop. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, and Geri Allen – artists who are all distinguished by their immense musical openness and range.
