La séparation

Description

Anne (Isabelle Huppert) and Pierre (Daniel Auteuil), an unmarried couple with a two-year-old child, go to the cinema one evening (showing Rossellini's Europa 51). During the screening, Pierre unsuccessfully reaches for Anne's hand. It is the beginning of the end of their relationship. Some time later, Anne confesses that she has fallen in love with another man. Pierre oscillates between numbness, denial, and intense emotional outbursts—until a reconciliation trip escalates into violence. “A study of a crumbling partnership: The film (a subtle, intelligent adaptation of Dan Franck's sensitive novel) deals with the tiny shifts in power that occur as Anne tries to clarify her future and Pierre struggles to keep up with or even prevent her changing behavior. Huppert and Auteuil both shine as the couple fighting against all odds to escape an unfolding nightmare.” (Time Out Magazine) Contributors and additional information:
