La cérémonie

Description

«A bourgeois family is looking for a maid for their country estate. The chosen woman proves to be dutiful, albeit stubborn. She has a secret to hide. The relationship with the happy family becomes further strained when the maid befriends a rebellious postwoman (Isabelle Huppert) from the village, who incites her anger against bourgeois life. While the Salzburg Festival is broadcast on television, the pent-up class hatred explodes. One of Chabrol's absolute masterpieces, a psychological thriller that progresses with astronomical precision and dreamlike inevitability, where surreal humor lurks at the corners with echoes of Buñuel.» (Christoph Huber, Austrian Film Museum, Sep 2016) «In her black leather jacket, Isabelle Huppert outfits her Breton barricade fighter with a proletarian punk attitude. When she ultimately destroys the bourgeois bedroom of her opponents, it happens with an exuberance reminiscent of rock stars trashing hotel rooms. For her fifth film directed by Claude Chabrol, Isabelle Huppert received the Coppa Volpi in Venice (together with her co-star Sandrine Bonnaire) as well as the French film award César.» (Berlinale, Feb 2022) Contributors and additional information: Director: Claude Chabrol Screenplay: Claude Chabrol, Caroline Eliacheff Author: Ruth Rendell Cinematography: Bernard Zitzermann Music: Matthieu Chabrol Editing: Monique Fardoulis Cast: Isabelle Huppert (Jeanne), Sandrine Bonnaire (Sophie), Jacqueline Bisset (Catherine), Jean-Pierre Cassel (Georges), Virginie Ledoyen (Melinda), Valentin Merlet (Gilles), Rochefort Julien (Jérémie), Dominique Frot (Madame Lantier), Jean-François Perrier (Pastor), Yves Verhoeven (Supplier), Philippe Lecoq (Philippe)
