In the cold Parisian winter air, a story unfolds about love, friendship, and the struggle between youthful dreams of the future and a dishearteningly empty pantry. Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì. Surrounded by a circle of young artists who enjoy life despite poverty, they love, part, and reconcile — just like Musetta and Marcello. But like the fleeting glow of a winter evening by the fireplace, their shared future also fades: Mimì is incurably ill! Puccini turned the nostalgic tone of the libretto into a often lush and indulgent score, with lyrical duets and ensembles. He manages to musically capture different social milieus and the exuberance of youthful love with the finest orchestral coloring. The work is full of world-famous melodies like Rodolfo's "Che gelida manina" or Mimì's "Mi chiamano Mimì." Musetta's waltz bursts with coquettish joy of life. Critics, after the success of "La bohème," saw Puccini as the legitimate successor to Giuseppe Verdi.
