Kümmernis

Description

«For all of those who, without having heard her story, claim that she did not exist.» In a new performance, Marie Popall and her team turn their attention to the forgotten folk saint St. Kümmernis. Hieronymus Bosch depicted the martyr in a dress and with a soft beard on her chin, hanging on a cross. The Catholic Church sought to erase her from history. The performers communally bring her legend into their midst. Through choreographic gestures and towering voices, an echo emerges within their bodies, bringing the past, present, and future into resonance. Amidst desire and resistance, Kümmernis is elevated to an icon: With her flowing dress and hairy mouth, she speaks out against binary categorizations and defiantly reflects the viewer’s gaze. The performers radically shed what clings to them, collectively exploring visions of their own bodies and voices. *** Duration: approx. 60 min Language: English *** Performance Eman Hussein, évo mine lambillon, Marie Popall Direction/Choreography Marie Popall Dramaturgy/Co-Direction Madeleine Lauw Stage/Lighting Lilli Unger Sound Zooey Agro Costume Carolina Misztela Production Management Fiona Schreier Photo Marie Popall Language English Co-Production Fabriktheater Rote Fabrik Supported by City of Zurich Culture, Ernst Göhner Foundation, Migros Culture Percentage
