Description

A Holocaust survivor returns to Germany after many years. He encounters people who have continued living as if nothing happened. The child he was forced to conceive back then and who he is searching for has meanwhile, without knowing his origins, taken the opposite path to Israel. An intergenerational web of guilt and forgiveness, closeness and violence. The only play by the late writer Yoram Kaniuk, who passed away in 2013, was recently discovered in his estate and celebrated its world premiere in 2025 at TD Berlin. Based on Kerem Hillel's directorial concept, in which all characters wear masks, and the music of Meittam Govreen, it creates an intense chamber play. Concrete dialogues meet poetic moments of encounter and create an atmospheric space of negotiation within a constantly intensifying stage design. Memories of the crimes of the Nazi era come into dialogue with the desire for renewal, between people, cultures, and hardened national relations. "What do you not remember when you remember?" as a probing question in the play links the present with the past. Is it about right or wrong – or more about how we deal with the past: suppress it, hold on to it? Or can we retell the past until we finally find ourselves in it?
