Description
How do collective memories arise? Which images, narratives, and symbols shape our societal values and collective identity? What significance do places of remembrance and figures of memory have for the collective memory? This expert tour is dedicated to the question of how war experiences are culturally processed and translated into shared self-images. The focus is on the way war is remembered, depicted, and passed on. Artworks, visual narratives, and cultural artifacts reveal how ideas of threat, heroism, willingness to sacrifice, neutrality, or defensiveness arise and which values they convey. From a cultural studies perspective, the tour asks how memory is staged: Why do certain figures, places, and narratives become carriers of collective memory? What identification offers do they create? And how do these narratives continue to influence individual perceptions, societal values, and self-images today? With: Dr. Darija Davidović, cultural scientist, Bern University of the Arts
